Diagram 550 is used in locations where wild horses are free to roam and are often crossing the road. Locations such as in the Dartmoor, Exmoor and the New Forest which still have free roaming ponies.

As per the UK Highways Traffic Sign Manual Chapter 4 - Warning Signs page: 53 The following advice is given:

9.3.1.  Signs to diagram 549 (“Sheep”, see Figure 9-4), 550 (“Wild horses”, see Figure 9-5) and 551 (“Wild animals”, see Figure 9-6) may be used wherever such animals are likely to be found in the road (see also 9.1.3). The signs may be plated for “For” and a distance.
