Diagram 554.1 is used directly after a ford and often fixed with back to back clips to the reverse of the "ford" sign. It is important that all road users test their brakes after passing through a body of water as the brakes will be wet and will reduce the friction between the pads and discs.

As per the UK Highways Traffic Sign Manual Chapter 4 - Warning Signs page: 57 The following advice is given:
10.1.3. The “Try your brakes” sign should also be installed on the exit side of a ford. Given the likely minor status of the road, adequate warning is usually provided if these signs are mounted on the reverse of the “Ford” signs.
