As per the UK Highways Traffic Sign Manual Chapter 4 - Warning Signs page: 37 The following advice is given:
7.2.1. The sign shown in diagram 529.1 (S2?2?22, see Figure 7-4) is for use in advance of tunnels, a supplementary plate indicates the distance ahead to the tunnel. If the tunnel is controlled by wig?wag signals, the sign should be supplemented by a plate to diagram 773 (S14?2?6, see Figure 20-4).
