Diagram 772 is to display a tramcar crossing that may pose a hazard to other road users. Modern day tram lines are still in operation in a number of UK cities including: South London, Blackpool, Edinburgh, Manchester , Nottingham, Sheffield and more.

As per the UK Highways Traffic Sign Manual Chapter 4 - Warning Signs page: 77 The following advice is given:

20.1.3.  Diagram 772 (S2‑2‑53, see Figure 20-3) is used in advance of open tramway crossings which have neither gates nor barriers. These signs should normally be sited at a distance from the crossing related to the 85th percentile speed of approaching vehicles, in accordance with Appendix A. See also 20.5 for guidance on the use of countdown markers and signing for queuing traffic.
