As per the UK Highways Traffic Sign Manual Chapter 4 - Warning Signs page: 77 The following advice is given:

20.1.2.  Diagram 770 (S2‑2‑51, see Figure 20-1) is used on the approach to a railway level crossing which is equipped with gates or barriers. This sign is also used at a tramway crossing if barriers are provided. Diagram 771 (S2‑2‑52, see Figure 20-2) is used in advance of open railway level crossings which have neither gates nor barriers.
