Diagram 811 informs road users of their right of way when approaching a road width restriction. The sign is often used in residential areas that have installed traffic calming measures in the form of islands and bollards.

As per the UK Highways Traffic Sign Manual Chapter 3 - Regulatory Signs page: 37 The following advice is given:

4.8.2.  The sign to diagram 811A (S11‑2‑1, see Figure 4-28) is mounted to face traffic approaching from the other direction. The upper sign must never be used upside down on its own in an attempt to imply reversed priority. The Regulations do not permit the plate forming the lower part of the sign to be omitted.
