Military Vehicle Crossing Ahead Permanent UK Road Sign

Diagram 582 warns road users that military vehicles are often in the area, crossing or moving along the road. Many people believe the sign is only for tanks, however it covers a broad spectrum of military vehicles that can all pose a delay to road users.

As per the UK Highways Traffic Sign Manual Chapter 4 - Warning Signs page: 75 The following advice is given:

19.1.1.  The sign to diagram 582 (S2‑2‑48, see Figure 19-1) may be used at locations where military vehicles are expected either to cross the road ahead or to be moving at low speed along the road. If the vehicles have regular entry and exit points along the road, the use of “For” and a distance plate may be appropriate. 19.1.2.  The sign is not restricted to warning of tanks; it may be used for any military vehicles which are either larger than might normally be expected along that type of road, or travel at reduced speed.
