Diagram 771 is the instantly recognisable level crossing sign. With the simplistic picture of a train (albeit a old steam train) the diagram 771 clearly demonstrates the hazard posed by trains in the carriageway ahead. Used to show level crossings that do not have barriers or gates.

Material: R2/RA2 reflective overlay on aluminium composite backing
Fixing Method: 2 fixing rails for post mounting
Reflectivity: Class 2 R2/RA2
As per the UK Highways Traffic Sign Manual Chapter 4 - Warning Signs page: 77 The following advice is given:
20.1.2. Diagram 770 (S2?2?51, see Figure 20-1) is used on the approach to a railway level crossing which is equipped with gates or barriers. This sign is also used at a tramway crossing if barriers are provided. Diagram 771 (S2?2?52, see Figure 20-2) is used in advance of open railway level crossings which have neither gates nor barriers.
