Traffic Queues Likely Ahead Permanent UK Road Sign

Diagram 584 is used to warn road users of an unexpected queue of traffic that might cause a hazard. The sign should not be used where it is obvious queues may form, such as at roundabouts or traffic lights. Instead, the sign should be placed in areas where there is a persistent queue problem that might pose a danger. Examples of this could be on a sharp bend, or brow of a hill.

As per the UK Highways Traffic Sign Manual Chapter 4 - Warning Signs page: 76 The following advice is given:

19.3.1.  Drivers should expect to meet queues on the approaches to roundabouts or traffic signals, where, if advance warning is needed, it can usually be given using signs to diagram 510 or 543 as appropriate. The queues likely sign, diagram 584 (S2‑2‑50, see Figure 19-4), and associated plate “Queues likely” (S2‑2‑50, see Figure 19-5), are intended for use where drivers might unexpectedly come across a queue, e.g. around a bend or over the brow of a hill. These signs should be used only where there is a persistent problem, causing a significant hazard, despite the presence of the standard warning signs and are not appropriate as a general warning of congestion. They should be sited sufficiently far in advance of the obstruction to the sight line to enable drivers to stop in time. Distance plates must not be used. 19.3.2.  Where the queue is likely to be in a road that leads from a junction ahead, the “Queues likely” plate may incorporate an arrow pointing to the left or to the right as appropriate. Details are shown on the working drawing. 19.3.3.  The sign may also be used on motorways or other high‑speed dual carriageway roads with grade separated junctions where queues on an exit slip road regularly extend back onto the main carriageway. Where queues on the slip road effectively shorten the deceleration length available, but do not usually extend onto the main through carriageway, the variant “Queues likely on slip road” should be used. Care should be taken to ensure that the assembly does not obstruct the driver’s view of existing signs.
