Diagram 552 warns road users they will pass over a cattle grid in the road ahead. A cattle grid is a metal grid that covers a ditch often between 2 walls or fences. This removes the need for a gate between areas that keep livestock. Due to the nature of the grid the livestock cannot walk over the ditch but cars can drive over with caution.

As per the UK Highways Traffic Sign Manual Chapter 4 - Warning Signs page: 55 The following advice is given:

9.4.1.  A cattle grid on a public road should always be preceded by the cattle grid warning sign to diagram 552 (S2‑2‑35, see Figure 9-11), as it might otherwise catch drivers unaware. Grids are especially hazardous for two-wheeled traffic. Signs should normally be sited at the standard distances set out in Appendix A. The “horse drawn vehicles and animals” plate with an arrow indicating the direction of the by‑pass for horse‑drawn vehicles or accompanied animals ANIMALS AND FARM TRAFFIC 54 (S2‑2‑35, see Figure 9-12) can accompany the sign if the entrance to the by‑pass is reasonably close to the grid. Otherwise a duplicate sign to diagram 552 and “horse drawn vehicles and animals” plate should be placed at the entrance, with a distance plate mounted directly below the triangular sign indicating the distance to the grid. If the grid is in another road, the advance warning sign should be accompanied by a distance plate with arrow.
